A gaggle of birds flew abruptly from the sparse trees around the lake as a cry rent the early morning air.
Blaine Bates had been sulking about the grounds of Soowees Magic Academy since classes were done. He'd been thinking back to when he first got to the school back in August. Incessantly his thoughts churned, wondering if there was anything different he possibly could have done to avoid this place.
His mom had ridden with him on the Lavender Line and escorted him up and through town to the river. She'd paid for his ferry ride over... except she had to come with him, too. Blaine had petulantly tried to head back toward the station and caused a bit of a scene. However, when they'd reached the other end of the river, where the school laid clear as day ahead of them, his mother had ushered him forth after a kiss on the cheek and hopped right back on the ferry.
The lanky boy had been avoiding approaching the school as much as possible since. Today, he amused himself by strolling around outside. It was after an encounter at the lake with a strange, winged creature that he found himself wandering the bank. Blaine mulled about, kicking at the damp sand.
Just then, he thought he heard a whisper. He was snapped out of his thoughts, now quirking his head at the river. After a moment, Blaine squatted down nearer to the water's surface. "...Eyes?" The wet sand was starting to get on his black jeans and hi-top sneakers as he clambered down on all fours, inching his face closer. There was a face that looked... kind of... like Emma's in the water? But what would Emma possibly be doing in a river that's silly, he thought. His striped shirt flapped in the light breeze.
He, however, suddenly wasn't feeling so breezy. Sharply, he was reminded of when only he got his letter of magical recognition from SMA. His mom had rejoiced pretty hard. She was excited, it's true but Blaine had convinced her to wait, in the hopes that his younger sister would get her letter, too. However, as evidenced by him alone being on that river bank, it was clear she never did. No, Emma had gotten accepted into a distinctly non-magic art school in New York and Blaine was sent here. His best friend... The boy scowled just thinking about it all for the umpteenth time. He quickly recoiled and tried to brush the sand off, effectively getting himself even more soiled.
Now full-on pouting, the first year slumped back to his knees. I just want to go home.
