FoxFire Books is a massive stone-and-glass architectural beauty of a bookstore owned and operated by Mette Singletary. The store is two above-ground floors with a cafe corner on the top floor, and a printing press and bindery in the basement. The glass windows along the front and west-facing side are comprised of solar glass, collecting energy from the sun and utilizing it to maintain the store's electricity, while barrels of rainwater behind the store collect and filter rainwater for use in the store's plumbing.
First impression of this store are everything to the owner, Mette. The landscaping along the front walkway is full of red pumice stone, succulents, and a small stream filled with glowing blue stones that patrons must cross using a wooden foot bridge (wheelchair accessible). String lights adorn the log railing on the top floor balconies and flicker beautifully at night.
The main floor is full of books arranged in wide, easily accessible aisles and coves, with seating throughout as both circular sofas and singular wide chairs , made with locally sourced wood and upholstery crafted by indigenous artisans from around the country, providing a uniquely modern, but clearly indigenous, air to the bookstore. The checkout is at the back of the store, below the cafe.
The second floor, accessible by glass stairs or open-air lift, hosts comics, visual novels, romance, imported comics from around the world, and children's literature. The cafe is situated in the back of the store, not far from the west balcony, and prides itself on a multitude of brewing methods and international and local organic beans, roasting the latter fresh daily in-house. All foods in the cafe are free of the most common allergens (no nuts, eggs, gluten, dairy, strawberries, or soy is used anywhere in the store, and it is strictly prohibited to bring any such food inside). The two balconies on the top floor face south (the front of the store), and west, and are supplied with numerous glass tables and chairs, both plush leather and typical metal cafe chairs with extra plump cushions. Firefly lights are strung along the thick log railing for ambiance and lighting during the evening hours.
The bottom floor, accessible by open-air lift, holds the gem of the bookstore: the printing press. The Foxfire Books printing press supports local and national authors utilizing renewable resources, such as bamboo paper and natural inks, and is powered by the glass solar panels that line the building above-ground. For every book that is printed for-profit, one is donated to local shelters, orphanages, and children's hospitals.
Foxfire Books hopes to expand to international printing services for under-served and oppressed communities, to continue indigenous traditions of storytelling and oral histories worldwide. Mette believes not only in acquisition of knowledge, but use of it, and fervently believes imagination is the best use of knowledge. The motto for Foxfire Books, then, is easy to understand...
